CAN LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS BE A RESILIENT SOLUTION TO OUR GLOBAL FOOD PROBLEMS?
CAN LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS BE A RESILIENT SOLUTION TO OUR GLOBAL FOOD PROBLEMS?
JANUARY 14, 2021
ONLINE WEBINAR HOSTED AT THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY
CIRENCESTER
UK
An open conversation & exploration of local food systems in the UK & around the world, their sustainability & resilience in times of need e.g. COVID-19, how technology can help reduce food miles, food waste, promote seasonal eating & aid in making nutritious locally produced food more widely available. Looking at the recent emergence of new consumer trends that are now leaning towards organic, direct from producer/independent brands & away from supermarkets.
The webinar will focus primarily on two areas of the world, India & the UK, talking to individuals from all areas of the industry, from chefs to farmers, drawing upon similarities between the socio-economic & environmental pressures effect producers & the consumer. With specific focus on the ways in which local food systems can help build stronger, more resilient communities that share a common goal of producing & consuming healthy sustainable food.
Like the UK, farmers are the backbone of Indian society & their economy, 75% of Indian farmers are small holders who struggle to effectively sell or deliver their produce. Some of the biggest differences between the two countries revolve around the availability of technology, especially in regard to marketing, food storage & delivery, we would like to use this opportunity to share knowledge & find ways in which technologies in the UK & EU could help aid farmers & producers in India.
